When traveling in New Zealand, do not miss Rotorua. It's like an adult fun park (in the clean sense!).

Advice: LESS IS MORE. If you want to really take in the culture, not just collect passport stamps, plan at LEAST a month in each place, 6 weeks minimum for Thailand, Vietnam, and even for a little place like Laos, at least a month - so much to experience. I'd leave out Eastern Europe, do it in another trip. Personally, I could easily spend a year just in India and Southeast Asia (add Indonesia maybe?) Don't make that oh-so-American mistake of thinking these countries are small and you can cruise through them in a week or two, seems to me that negates the whole point of a year-long trip. Get an OPEN rtw air ticket, and just see how much ground you really want to cover once you get there and into the travel groove. The greatest joy of a long trip, is having no itinerary, no agenda, no rush to be anywhere!
