If you want to really take in the culture, not just collect passport stamps, plan at LEAST a month in each place, 6 weeks minimum for Thailand, Vietnam, and even for a little place like Laos, at least a month - so much to experience. I'd leave out Eastern Europe, do it in another trip. Personally, I could easily spend a year just in India and Southeast Asia (add Indonesia maybe?) Don't make that oh-so-American mistake of thinking these countries are small and you can cruise through them in a week or two, seems to me that negates the whole point of a year-long trip. Get an OPEN rtw air ticket, and just see how much ground you really want to cover once you get there and into the travel groove.
