Imagine Danny and Sandy with fangs - it just doesn't get better!

With vampire books, movies, and television shows abounding, it’s no wonder vampire tourism is now taking off as well.  Billed as the current cultural phenomenon, vampires  are now welcoming outsiders to share their lives for a short time as cultural tourists.

We all know that vampires have long been shunted to the side in favor of other “myths” such as Sasquatch, aliens, werewolves, and people who actually got skinny from L.A. Weight Loss Centers.  No more.

The Twilight books, True Blood, and other pop culture vampire entertainment have now made it possible for vampires to shine, as it were.  Interested in a vampire cultural tour?  Here’s what you should know:

  1. You’ll be up during the night and sleeping during the day so plan ahead of time.  This is basically like traveling to the other side of the world as far as jetlag is concerned.
  2. As you likely know, vampires do not eat so don’t expect to be offered food.  You might want to bring some granola bars to tide you over.
  3. This is NOT Twilight – there may or may not be your very own Edward Cullen or sexy lady vampires.  If you end up with some pasty and lumpy specimen, remember, you’re doing this for the culture.
  4. Make sure to bring your own first aid kit, complete with bandaids and while this should go without saying, try to avoid cutting yourself; that blood could be dangerous for your well-being while on the tour.
  5. Under no circumstances should you joke around a la “I vant to suck your blood!” They really don’t like that.

There are U.S.-based and Europe-based vampire tours available; pick the one that has all the options you deem important, including perhaps: single coffin, nightly entertainment (don’t miss the vampire community’s rendition of Grease, the musical), or daily vampire lectures.

Above all else, have a bloody good time!

P.S. Sadly, this is not only a lame joke (although it definitely is that, too).  There actually are vampire-based tourism opportunities these days.  Here are a few:
