I will critique #11.

I have taken a couple of trips to developed countries (Italy, Spain) where I did not read up on my destination because I simply wanted to remain completely ‘uninfluenced’, without the tainted lens of Lonely Planet or someone else’s experience.

For some destinations, however, I agree that a bit of research goes a long way!

How about…

-Mother Nature not cooperating while your on holiday
-Locals who live in a tourist destination and complain about living in a tourist destination
-Being allowed to stay only 90 out of 180 days in the Schengen territory of Europe with a US passport… What if you want to stay just a few extra days???

Great list! May I also suggest, driving to see a “sight” before exploring the nearby area around your hotel. Sometimes, the best places aren’t on the “Must See” List.
