Peeves

Travel is never perfect but trips are always made worse for us by encountering any of the following pet peeves:

12. Those little cards in hotels that ask us to help them care for the environment by hanging up our towels and not using a new one each day.  We get it and agree but think it rather ironic that these big hotels are preaching to us about being eco-conscious.  We know it’s all about their own bottom-line.
11. Travelers who don’t bother to read up on the destination before their trip.
10. Having to drive on the left-hand side of the road (sorry my leftover British colony friends!).
9. Travelers who expect everyone to speak their language (typically English).
8. Travelers who don’t treat service industry staff as human beings, instead acting as if they are there only to cater to the traveler’s every whim and mood.
7. Service industry staff who don’t treat travelers as human beings, instead acting all snobby and bothered by every question asked (this is your job – if you don’t like it, quit).
6. Extra fees for checking luggage (only encourages people to cram everything into a monster-sized carry-on).
5. Getting sick on vacation.
4. Hotels that serve only “western” food or toned down local food.
3. Unpacking.
2. Cramming too much into one day while on vacation.

And our number one travel pet peeve:

Not being able to travel as much as we’d like due to U.S. companies’ old and tired practice of giving employees only two or three weeks of vacation for the whole year.  Compare that to countries in Europe or Latin America where folks get six or more weeks of vacation per year and frequently take off an entire month during the summer months.

What are your travel pet peeves?

  1. Great list! May I also suggest, driving to see a “sight” before exploring the nearby area around your hotel. Sometimes, the best places aren’t on the “Must See” List.

    How about…

-Mother Nature not cooperating while your on holiday
-Locals who live in a tourist destination and complain about living in a tourist destination
-Being allowed to stay only 90 out of 180 days in the Schengen territory of Europe with a US passport… What if you want to stay just a few extra days???

  3. I will critique #11.

I have taken a couple of trips to developed countries (Italy, Spain) where I did not read up on my destination because I simply wanted to remain completely ‘uninfluenced’, without the tainted lens of Lonely Planet or someone else’s experience.

For some destinations, however, I agree that a bit of research goes a long way!
