Host Our Coast Winner Announced

Wednesday, June 17, 2009

delmarvaWe have been closely following the Delmarva Low Impact Tourism Experiences’ Host Our Coast competition.  If you’re not familiar with the organization, DLITE is an alliance of local, state, and federal agencies along with local tourism providers and natural resource managers that encourages nature-based tourism in the Delmarva area, the peninsula joining Delaware, Maryland and Virginia which borders two of the richest, most diverse estuaries on the eastern seaboard.

DLITE’s Host Our Coast is a smaller version of the recent New Zealand “Best Job in the World” contest won by Ben Southall.

The Host Our Coast winner will be paid $10,000 to live in an Ocean City condo for two months this summer while blogging and vlogging about various low impact tourism options the Delmarva area has to offer.

We were actually all set to apply, wrote our sample blog post, and began our video, when we realized we really suck at videos.  But if we hadn’t sucked so bad, based on the script we wrote, we can assure you that our video would have kicked all the other videos’ buttocks.  Alas, since it was not to be, we decided to pull for Jane Thomas, otherwise known as Shore Sheila, an Australian ecologist living on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Shore Sheila didn’t win but another one of our favorites did:  a couple named Paul and Melanie who have been spending a lot of time recently in Chile, Argentina, Peru, and Uruguay.   While we do believe a bit of anti-Aussie-accent may have been at work, we wish Paul and Melanie all the best in their summer o’ fun and will be following their blog for some great ideas for Delmarva goodness.

  1. Thanks for the shout-out Shadia! I was a bit bummed about not winning but I think Paul and Melanie will do a great job and will be following their blog with interest.

In other news, my boss was more disappointed than I about not winning this gig, so he has offered to semi-sponsor my blogging efforts this summer around the Chesapeake Bay and Coastal Bays - this blog is gonna be hosted on my work website at http://www.ian.umces.edu/blog.

    cheers mate! haha.
