Real or Fake? African Safari vs. Disney Animal Kingdom

Monday, April 6, 2009

mickeymousesafariOkay, we’re going to try a new regular feature called Real or Fake?  We find hard-to-believe questions purportedly posed by real people and then posted on various forums, magazines, etc.  Then we make fun of them (shocker, we know) and decide whether the question is real or fake.

First up: a question posted on TravelWeekly, a UK online magazine.  The question is:

“I want my children to see African wildlife in a wide open space. Will they appreciate an expensive safari, or should I just take them to Disney’s Animal Kingdom?”

Seriously?  Are you seriously asking this question?  We’re not saying that Animal Kingdom is not a fun time, but are you seriously comparing it with the real Africa and considering a vacation between a real African safari and a Disney theme park?

How did the travel experts answer this question with a straight face?  Here’s expert Chris McIntyre making the case for Africa:

“Seeing animals in the wild is far, far better than any theme park… Safaris are about Africa, the wide open spaces and the people as much as the animals. Visiting a local village and seeing how people live is a wonderful experience, and educational in a way a theme park can’t be.”

Ya think?

On the other hand, Noula Agapiou advocates for Disney, saying:

“At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, not only do you get a 33-acre private savannah, where you can enjoy the feel of a real safari, you also have adventure rides, walking tours, animal encounters, Kids Discovery Clubs, the Wildlife express train and many other attractions. There are great live entertainment shows too, from Finding Nemo the Musical to The Festival of the Lion King.”

Yeah, we’ve heard that the Finding Nemo the Musical version put on by the tour guides and the Maasai on the Samburu Game Reserve lacks a certain je ne sais quoi.

Real or fake?  Sadly, we must vote Real.

I would definitely vote for a real African Safari, if you can afford it! Our family just returned from a Walt Disney World vacation and one of the parks we visited was Disney’s Animal Knigdom. I was very dissapointed we wasted our valued time in visiting this park. Not only did we have to wait 2 and a half hours to go the Safari ride, it wasn’t that great either. My mother-in-law and I both swore that the big giraffe (what they said was the Mother) was fake! The Elephants (two of them with seemingly exact movememnts) appeared to be fake as well, swinging back and forth by a pile of elephant excrement. Also the baby elephant in the truck looked fake. The other animals were difintely real and if it were not for the Lion appearance near the nd of the tour I would have totally written the Safari off as a joke.
